Today, it is essential for websites to operate in a secure (SSL) environment. Even Google ranks sites higher that use SSL security. Which means they rank lower sites that don’t.
In the past, getting a secure SSL certificate installed on your website was a major expense, often costing more than the hosting itself, on an annual basis. And it was a major hassle to get installed. If you tried to do it yourself, you know what we’re talking about. Most often, clients were left at the mercy of their web host. They practically had to beg them for help in setting up an SSL certificate.
At LazyLizard, all websites come pre-installed with a working SSL certificate and it needs no configuration whatsoever from your end. You can access your site via “https” from the moment it’s up and running. Which is a good thing, because if you’re using a CMS (Content Management System) like WordPress, if you don’t login to the admin area via SSL, your login credentials, username and password are susceptible to being intercepted by hackers.

SSL stands for “Secure Sockets Layer”. When you connect to a website through SSL, your connection is protected from anyone, including hackers, seeing the data that is transferred between you and the server. For instance, if you go to login to the admin area of your WordPress site and enter your username and password, if the page isn’t protected with SSL, your username and password are totally open for any and all to see as they travel across the internet from your computer to the server.
The average person, obviously, has no idea how to see this data, but hackers do. This is what they do for a living. They have special scanning software and all they have to do is set it up and turn it on. It can then scan all kinds of traffic traveling through billions of internet connections. For them, it’s very easy and very cheap to do. Maybe once a day or so they capture someone’s username and password, that they can then use to login to your WordPress site and take full control of it.
This is just one of many security procedures LazyLizard has implemented to protect you from the hackers who work tirelessly to intercept your logon credentials.
Most web hosts make a lot of money selling SSL certificates to their clients. They can purchase them for around $10 a year, but they’ll sell them for anywhere between $50 and $100 a year. They tell their clients that it’s a lot of work to install and configure them (which used to be true), and that the certificates themselves cost a lot (which also used to be true).
One reason we install them automatically on all new websites we host is twofold. One, it gives our clients the best security possible and therefore, the best experience. If our client sites don’t get hacked, our clients are happy with us and refer us to their friends.
The other reason is that if our client sites are safe and secure, it makes for a much more secure shared server environment for everyone. A single hack into an individual WordPress site can potentially give a malicious hacker a way to break through that site and intrude upon other WordPress installations on the same server. So, by making it as hard as we can at the host level for hackers to do this, not only are individual sites protected, but our whole server system is more secure.
